This unique community was said to be based on the ideal of individual sovereignty and responsibility and residents were encouraged to pursue their self-interest as they saw fit. The community had a local private currency based upon labor exchange in order to trade goods and services. Land was bought and sold as private property. Initially, no system of authority existed in the colony, with no courts, jails or police. The Civil War and new residents that didn’t share the same philosophy contributed to the town’s eventual dissolution and in 1864, it was renamed Brentwood after the town of Brentwood, Essex, in England. Almost all of the original buildings that existed in modern times have been destroyed, with the exception of two Octagon houses, the original schoolhouse and a residence. Brentwood has a fascinating history and is now home to about 65,000 residents who enjoy living on Long Island, being close to the big City of New York with a large variety of activities, culture, restaurants and more. Brentwood State Park is a 52-acre family-friendly sport facility consisting of busy baseball and soccer fields during the outdoor sport season.
